Mission

The mission of the Undergraduate Advisory Cabinet is to contribute diverse ideas and perspectives on matters that impact the undergraduate academic experience at the University of Arizona. The Undergraduate Advisory Cabinet (UAC) fulfills this mission by providing suggestions and input on current or future programs, services, policies, and other academic initiatives; advising on a range of academic issues that are important to undergraduate students; and facilitating dialogue and communication between undergraduate students and the Division of Undergraduate Education. This will include advocating for resources; and supporting the advancement of student ideas and interests as we work to implement the President’s Strategic Imperatives. The UAC will provide thought leadership that will influence decision-making and contribute to projects that will improve the overall undergraduate student academic experience at the University of Arizona.

The UAC will consist of outstanding undergraduate students at the University of Arizona who work closely throughout the year with the Vice Provost for Academic Affairs and leadership within the Division of Undergraduate Education.

Structure and Responsibilities

The UAC consists of students representing a broad cross-section of the undergraduate student population at the University of Arizona, from across the wide variety of academic disciplines and experiences that exist at the university.

The cabinet will be made up of 12 undergraduate students who will serve a two-semester term. The cabinet will have three, two-hour meetings per semester for a total of six meetings during the year. Cabinet members will be asked to commit to a total of one hour of prep before each meeting resulting in a total time commitment of 18 hours.

Cabinet Requirements

  • Undergraduate student at the University of Arizona
  • Attend in-person meetings (date and time TBD)
  • Review meeting agendas and supporting materials prior to cabinet meetings
  • Time commitment: at least six two-hour meetings per academic year for a total of 12 hours (four meetings per semester), and an hour of prep per meeting (6 hours total).

Optional Course Credit

UAC members will have the option to earn credit for their participation. This one-credit Vertically Integrated Projects (VIP) course entitled Getting to Know U will be offered concurrently with this experience. This course will teach students about the organizational structure of universities (i.e., how universities work) from an insider’s perspective. This will include a historical perspective of higher education, the manner in which universities are organized and governed, and an overview of the current major issues that universities face nationwide. We will investigate how these issues manifest themselves in the State of Arizona and at the University of Arizona. Finally, we will investigate a case study that involves the application of design thinking methodologies as a problem-solving tool for confronting issues in higher education specific to the undergraduate academic experience at the University of Arizona.
